Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about giving and finding equipment, pickups, safety and your account.
The basics
What is iMediShare?
iMediShare is a free community website where people give away pre-owned medical equipment they no longer need, and neighbors who need it can find it nearby. It also helps you find free and low-cost clinics. Nothing is bought or sold.
Does it cost anything?
No. Accounts are free and every item is given away for free. Donors never ask for or accept payment. Optional contributions toward the website's running costs are separate and never affect your access.
Who can use iMediShare?
Anyone 18 or older in the United States. You can browse without an account; you need a free account to request a connection, list an item or post a request.
Is iMediShare a medical provider?
No. iMediShare does not give medical advice and does not inspect, certify or sterilize equipment. Always check with a qualified healthcare professional before using medical equipment. See the disclaimer.
Giving equipment
What can I give?
Clean, working equipment in seven categories: mobility supplies, patient support, respiratory, pressure care, bathroom safety, orthopedic goods and personal care. Single-use items (like CPAP masks or catheters), custom-fitted items (like hearing aids or TLSO braces) and a few devices that need professional calibration cannot be listed. The Restricted Items Policy has the full list.
How do I list an item?
Choose Give equipment, then add a title, category, condition, description, up to five photos and your ZIP code. A moderator reviews each listing before it appears in search.
Do I have to share my address?
No. A listing only needs your ZIP code, and iMediShare never asks for or stores your street address. When you are comfortable, share pickup details directly with the person you are giving the item to, or suggest meeting somewhere public.
What is a listing ID?
Every listing has a short ID such as IMS-7K3F9Q, shown under its title. Quote it when you contact us or report a problem, or type it into search to find that listing.
Some equipment shows an extra safety notice. Why?
Mechanical, electrical or life-sustaining devices such as oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, hospital beds and patient lifts can be listed, but they carry a safety notice and people must acknowledge it before contacting you.
How long does my listing stay up?
If a listing has not changed in 53 days we email you a reminder, and it is archived a week later unless you renew it. You can relist an archived item from your dashboard in one click.
Finding equipment
How do I find equipment near me?
Search by keyword, then set your city or ZIP code and a distance from 10 to 250 miles. You can also filter by category and condition, sort by closest, or use your current location.
What if nobody has listed what I need?
Post a request on the request board so donors can see it, and save an alert from the search page to get an email when a matching item is listed near you.
Is the equipment safe to use?
Items are given as-is. Inspect everything before you take it, check the model number for recalls on the FDA recall database, and have a qualified professional check medical equipment before use. Our safety guide has a checklist.
Pickup and handoff
How does a handoff work?
Send one connection request. If the donor accepts, the item is automatically reserved for you, appears in both Pickup sections, and you both receive each other's contact details to arrange the handoff. The donor confirms the handover and you confirm receipt; each of you accepts a short handoff agreement. The listing is then taken down, you both get an email record, and the donor receives a certificate.
What if the pickup falls through?
The donor can reopen the listing from the Pickups page so someone else can have it. You will get an email if a reservation for you is cancelled.
What if the seeker never confirms they received it?
We remind them after three days. Seven days after confirming the handover, the donor can close the handoff with a short note, and a moderator may review it.
Safety and privacy
Who can see my contact details?
Only the donor and seeker in an accepted connection. A seeker consents when sending the request; the donor must accept and consent before iMediShare reveals either person's name, phone number and email. Contact details never appear on public profiles or listings.
Are my photos safe to upload?
We remove hidden location data from photos before they are stored, so a picture never reveals where it was taken.
How do I report a problem?
Use Report on any listing, conversation or rating. A moderator reviews every report. For anything urgent or unsafe, contact local emergency services first. You can also contact us.
Your account
Why do I need a code to sign up?
We email a 6-digit code to confirm the address is yours. It keeps fake accounts out and makes sure you receive connection and pickup updates.
Can I choose which emails I get?
Yes. In Settings you can turn off emails for connection requests, handoff updates, reminders and saved search alerts. Sign-in codes, password resets and handoff records are always sent.
How do I download or delete my data?
Settings has a Download my data button and a Request account deletion button.
Badges, stories and support
Do I get anything for giving?
Besides our thanks, you get a printable certificate of appreciation for every completed donation. Open it from your dashboard history or the link in your donation record email. It is not a tax receipt.
What do the badges mean?
Giver badges celebrate completed handoffs: Giver after your first, Generous giver after five and Community champion after ten. A supporter star appears only if you contributed to running costs and turned the badge on in Settings. Amounts are never shown.
Can I share my experience?
Yes. Share your story and, once a moderator has reviewed it, it may appear on the Stories page and elsewhere on iMediShare. You choose the name shown, and please leave out health details.
Are contributions tax-deductible?
Not unless iMediShare tells you otherwise in writing. Contributions help cover hosting, database, email and domain costs, and are never payment for an item.
